The Oaks Gallery at the Willamette Art Center is pleased to feature Northwest potter, Fred Hamann, from April 1 to May 15th. The reception will be on April 9th from 6 to 8 pm. Come have a conversation with the artist about his exotic travels working with ceramics and the process he uses developing complex textures in his beautiful stoneware.
Hamann graduated from Oregon College of Education in 1972. When he was an art student in college, he started taking pottery classes and accumulated a few tools. He decided to continue with pottery full time because it allowed him to explore his inner self, and, at the same time he found throwing pots relaxing and meditative. In order to make a living he had to develop his own style to be able to sell his work, so he create utilitarian stoneware pottery people could use and enjoy. Pottery is a part of him that parallels his personality, it is very pragmatic, and it takes a high level of craftsmanship and focus on detail.
