Jason Laney: November’s Ceramic Artist
JASON LANEY of Samhain Pottery
Since Jason discovered the world of clay in 2006, he has become completely immersed in and passionate about every facet of it, from its history to the unique interactions of clays, glazes and firings. He loves to create, experiment, and play with clay. Most of his pottery is wheel-thrown, using various earthenware, stoneware and porcelain clays. He focuses on making unique pieces that are organic, asymmetrical, and that enhance the movement of the clay. He likes pushing clay to its limits, as well as freeing it to form itself.
He likes to control the chaos of collapsing forms, while creating forms that are as free from restriction as possible. He collapses the clay while it’s spinning on the wheel, which causes centrifugal force to torque the clay. He then uses the clay forms—the torques, texture and movement—to pool multiple glazes and thus create various color interactions
